The common side effects of this surgery is a long and scary list consisting of liver failure, kidney failure, leakages, blockages, bone loss, muscle wasting, tooth loss from constant vomiting and reflux... it goes on and on.

Many of the people who have this surgery had to go in repeatedly for follow up and corrective surgeries costing the time lost at work, pain and suffering in recovery and money. Not one of them is glad they had it done. All of them wish they could undo the damage done to them. They suffer from bowel leakages, excess and uncontrollable intestinal gas, and all kinds of gastro-intestinal disturbances.

Some of them are in chronic pain but the doctors are not able to offer them any relief. The sad truth is that people are being used for the vast amount of money to be made off of the obese. Doctors are making thousands of dollars on each surgery and some doctors perform many of them each day. Hospitals are also making a killing (no pun intended) with gastric surgery so until the lawsuits exceed the profits, they will continue to perform this procedure on desperate people who are being convinced by their doctors that this is their best or only option. A crime is being committed against the obese. There is 1% morbid rate and what is very interesting is that after five years medical cost do not seem to change between the obese and those who have endured this very intrusive procedure.

OK, here it is, and this is the first time I am publicly doing this, so I'm a bit nervous. Mostly, because I'm ashamed of myself for doing it to begin with.

Yes, I had a stomach stapling 15 years ago when they were first doing them and it was the biggest mistake of my life. I did end up losing a lot of weight but my health suffered tremendously. I could eat nothing for over a year, and I mean nothing. The doctors kept telling me it was all in my head, and that I was just scared to eat. I WAS NOT! I tried and tried to no avail. Everything I ate, even pudding, would come back up on me. It was scary and I though I would die from this surgery. Even the vitamins I took to survive, liquid vitamins, I had to struggle to keep down. It was a living hell!

Finally after 14 months they decided to do some tests and realized that they did the surgery TOO WELL. They had to reverse it and I gained back all the weight I lost plus another 100 pounds! Just writing this is making me angry all over again.

I hear from people EVERYDAY who have had this done and the horror stories they tell me would shock anyone. Some people lose their hair, some men can't get an erection even using Viagra, some people didn't end up losing weight at all, and some lost the weight but never, ever feel well. It may work for some people, but I'm convinced it isn't a real option for most.

My time in this hell on earth in the months after I had the stapling is a time I would love to forget. It was the worst time I have ever had in my life. I hated myself for doing it, and I obviously still have "issues" about it.

I pray no one goes to this extreme unless it is truly the only and last defense available to you. I beg you to keep trying everything else.
